Grace Barthuly quietly left this world early May 21, 2006, at home, with her family there to wish her well on her journey.
Born Grace Virginia Ness in Beach, N.D., on Jan. 7, 1936, to the parents of Nels and Evelyn Marie Ness. Her first home was Medora, N.D., and shortly, the family moved to Laurel.
As a youth, growing up in a house built out of three railcars close to the railroad tracks, Mom would always talk about the sound of the trains and how they shook the house. She loved the sound of the train whistle.
Mom grew up in a large, loving family. There was plenty to do, whether it was doing chores or climbing trees. In high school, she played drums in the school band. She taught this gift of music to all her children by teaching them how to play the piano or recorder. Among her favorite hobbies: she loved to crochet, work in her garden, make wild berry jelly, and do Norwegian hardanger.
After graduating from high school, she went to Eastern Montana College. During this time she met her life companion. She married Dennis Barthuly in 1955. They celebrated 50 years together and raised five wonderful children. Family meant everything to Mom and making things family was what she did best, whether it was a family drive in the country, the family dinner or just being home.
Mom was a very dynamic and interesting person. She was conversant in many subjects and would share this information with her children. We could talk to Mom any time of the day or night. We will miss her guidance and knowledge.
Mom worked at Kmart until her retirement in 1998. She met many caring and loving friends along the way. After she retired, Mom spent her time watching her grandchildren and flower garden grow. She enjoyed life and expressed this by blowing bubbles, stargazing and flying kites.
Her husband, Dennis Barthuly, and son Jim of the family home survive Mom. Also, daughters Peggy Robbins (Bob) of Castle Rock, Colo., Lori Guenthner (Jeff); sons Dan Barthuly (Theresa), Joe Barthuly, all of Billings; grandchildren Jenni, R.B., Mandi, Taryn, Jackie, Maggie, Sam and Jessie; extended grandchildren, Jenn, Blake and Jeffery; seven sisters and two brothers.
Preceding her in death are her parents, Nels and Evelyn Ness.
Cremation and a private graveside memorial took place at the Laurel Cemetery, May 23.
She is remembered with love and admiration.
