George A. Townsend, 83, Fulton, passed away at 8:54 a.m. Thursday, June 29, 2006, at Indiana University Medical Center, Indianapolis.

He was born on Dec. 24, 1922 in Peru to William and Esther (See) Townsend. On Oct. 15, 1942 he married Dorothy A. Ramer in Peru, and she survives.

Townsend retired from the Fulton County Highway Department. He had been a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of the American Legion. He enjoyed junkin', antiques, mowing yards and going to sales.

Survivors besides his wife include four sons, Terry Townsend and wife Sally, Fulton, Gary Townsend, Rochester, Steve Townsend and wife Delores, Kettering, Ohio, and Rex Townsend and wife Chris, Ruckersville, Va.; 14 grandchildren, Jeremy Townsend and wife Kristi, Fulton, Jennifer Roush and husband Troy, Lucerne, Jaime Smith and wife Nikki, South Bend, Zachari and Amanda Townsend, both of Fulton, John Townsend and wife Kara, West Lafayette, Leah Townsend and fiance Don Bush, Battle Ground, Alicia Townsend, Lafayette, Adam and Katrina Townsend, both of Royal Center, Matthew Hubin and wife Alicia, Italy, Michelle Townsend, Kettering, Ohio, Mitchell and Kaitlyn Townsend, both of Ruckersville, Va.; 13 great grandchildren; four sisters, Mary Cundiff, Converse, Ester Russell and companion Leon Brown, Nyona Lake, Susie Hughes and husband John, Peru, and Kay Frances Townsend, Wabash.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, a great granddaughter, two sisters and one brother.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Zimmerman Bros. Funeral Home, Fulton, with the Rev. George Hapner officiating.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday and one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Burial will be in the Salem Cemetery, northwest of Fulton, where military graveside services will conducted by the Rochester American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars posts.
