Thomas Abernathy died Wednesday morning at the residence of Mrs. Franklin's three miles west of Caldwell. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Irwin at the residence after which the remains were brought to town and interred in the cemetery.
Thomas Abernathy was born in St. Clair county, Illinois, Feb. 18, 1831, which made him 62 years, 10 months and 29 days old. He was a consistant Christian. He gave his heart to God when quite young and has remained a faithful servant. During his last illness, he often spoke of his hope in reaching his heavenly home. His last words were what Christ said: "I go to prepare a place for you that where I am there ye may be also."
Mr. Abernathy was an old soldier. He enlisted as Sergeant in Co. H. 63rd Ill. Vol. Inf., in Dec. 1861. After serving about two years he was discharged for the purpose of re-enlisting which he did, and served till the close of the war. He was with Sherman in his famous "March to the Sea." The same quiet, resolute bravery, which was a trait of his life was one of the characterictics of his soldier life.
The Upton post took part in the funeral service at the grave.
