Major League Baseball Player. For ten seasons (1958 to 1960, 1964 to 1967 and 1969 to 1971), he was a pitcher with the Kansas City Athletics, Los Angeles Dodgers, California Angels, Houston Astros and Montreal Expos. Born Howard Dean Reed, he attended Wilson High School in Texas and later played collegiate baseball at the University of Texas in Austin, where he achieved All-American honors. Selected by the Kansas City Athletics as an amateur free agent in 1957, he made his Major League debut on September 13, 1958. Mainly a reliever during the course of his career, he experienced a world championship with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1965, as he pitched in two games against the Minnesota Twins during the World Series. He had stints with the Angels and Astros, prior to being acquired by the Expos. Reed held the distinction as being on Montreal’s roster during their inaugural season in 1969. In 1970, he produced a career-high 57 games-pitched while with the Expos. In 229 career regular season games, he compiled a 26 win, 29 loss record, with a 3.72 lifetime ERA in 515 innings-pitched. After retiring from baseball, he owned and operated a farm in his native Texas. He died from heart failure at the age of forty-seven.
