He went on to study at Norwich University in Vermont and received his Bachelor's Degree at Gustavus Adolphus College, St. Peter, Minnesota, in 1956. While at Gustavus, he met Dorothy Palm, whom he married in 1957. Dorothy's uncle, Reverend J. Arthur Palm, served as Pastor of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church from 1928-1931, when the church was called St. John's Evangelical Church. He received his Divinity Degree at Augustana Seminary, Rock Island, Illinois, in 1960. His first calling was as a mission developer and first pastor at Ascension Lutheran Church in Kentwood, Michigan. From 1962-1964 he served as associate pastor of Christ the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Adrian, Michigan, serving as a member of the Kiwanis, working with Michigan Migrant Ministry, and teaching religion part-time at Siena Heights College and Adrian College. In 1971 Pastor Chilkott and his family moved to Pontiac Township, Michigan, which was incorporated as the City of Auburn Hills in 1983. He served as pastor of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church from 1971-1999. After he retired from active ministry in 1999, he continued to preach at different Lutheran churches and one Episcopal church as a supply pastor, filling in for regular pastors who would be away from their church that Sunday.
Pastor Chilkott was involved with Pontiac Ecumenical Ministry and served on ten different Auburn Hills committees. In 1994 he was appointed to the Auburn Hills City Council and was elected to a two-year term in 1995. He took part in the dedication of the Auburn Hills Community Center on his 72nd birthday, May 6, 2006.

In Adrian he performed in several community theater productions at Croswell Opera House and Siena Heights College, one of his roles being the Wizard in "Wizard of Oz." He also loved to sing. He had a great tenor voice. He sang the liturgy during the church services, as well as solos for special music during the service. He was a member of the Jackson Chorale in the 1970's and in 1999 joined the Detroit Swedish Arpi Male Chorus.
