Attorney, Author. Chief prosecutor at the Nuremberg Trials. Born in Schenectady, New York, he graduated from Harvard Law School with his degree in law in 1932. His inital entrance into the public forum began at the end of World War II when, as a young Army Colonel at Nuremberg, he helped write the rules for prosecuting many of the top Nazi leaders. He was promoted to Brigadier General and served as the US Chief Counsel at Nuremberg from 1946 to 1949. After the Nuremberg Trials Taylor lectured and wrote extensively about the moral conduct of the United States and other nations, and was an early opponent of the Senate investigations conducted by Senator Joseph R. McCarthy. He was also critical of US policy during the Vietnam War. In his later years he lived near Columbia University and taught at that institution until his retirement in 1994.
