Daughter of Isaiah David Burks and Sarah Marie Tarpley, Sister to William Henry, Katie Elizabeth, and Everett Franklin Burks. Half sister of Mary, Viola, Delores, Dorothy, Delbert and Samuel Burks.

Clara married Allen Blue Carman on March 21, 1914 in Collin County, Texas. To this union were born 6 children: Margie Opal, Edith Modine, Buna Fay, Hollis Quentin, Charlsie Alene, and Gwendean Carmen The family remained in Collin County for 10 years, relocating to Roscoe, Texas in 1926. After Allen's death in 1948, she moved to Odessa, where she lived for almost 50 years. On September 6, 1961, she married William H. Gage, a retired Baptist Minister. Ethel, as she was more commonly known, was a member of the Second Baptist Church. A homemaker. Devoted and loving Mother. A Grandmother who never let her cookie jar go empty.

She suffered for many years from Dementia. While residing in the Deering Nursing Home in Odessa for 12 years, she died peacefully from heart failure.
