He is considered one of the greatest Czech writers of the 20th century and particularly remembered for his best seller "Closely Watched Trains" (1965) (Ostøe sledované vlaky), which was made into a film by Czech director Jiøí Menzel. His best known works also include "Dancing Lessons for the Advanced in Age," "The Little Town Where Time Stood Still," " I Served the King of England" and "Too Loud a Solitude." He died when he fell from a fifth floor hospital in Prague, where he was trying to feed pigeons, despite suicides by jumping from a fifth-floor window figured in several of his books.
