Author. He was born in Brno, Moravia, Czech Republic. He is considered one of the greatest Czech writers of the 20th century and particularly remembered for his best seller "Closely Watched Trains" (1965) (Ostøe sledované vlaky), which was made into a film by Czech director Jiøí Menzel. His best known works also include "Dancing Lessons for the Advanced in Age," "The Little Town Where Time Stood Still," " I Served the King of England" and "Too Loud a Solitude." He died when he fell from a fifth floor hospital in Prague, where he was trying to feed pigeons, despite suicides by jumping from a fifth-floor window figured in several of his books.
