Joseph S. Abel, 88, R. 12, Bedford, died at 3:30 a.m. today at his residence. Born in Daviess County (Montgomery), he was the son of Adam J. and Anna (Cheevers) Abel. He first married Mary Inez Dunn in 1927 and she died in 1970. He married Mary Alice Bair in 1972 and she died in 1991. He was a blacksmith and welder at General Motors Powertrain, Bedford, a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus, where he was a past Grand Knight. Survivors include one son, Bill Abel of Indianapolis; two stepsons, Andy Bair and Sam Bair, both of Bedford; two brothers, Bernard Abel of Bedford and Frank Abel of Martinsville; one half brother, Robert Abel of Bedford; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Joe B. Abel; and one sister, Peggy Snyder. Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, Bedford, with Father Bernie Cox officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery, Bedford. Friends may call from 4-9 p.m. Wednesday at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home, Bedford. A Rosary service will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
