US Congressman, Attorney. He was a United States Representative from the State of New York. He was born one of eight children as Henry Bleecker Metcalfe in Albany, New York, to George Metcalfe (1764-1826), and his wife Elizabeth Talbot Metcalfe (1773-1826), on January 20, 1805. He was educated locally and later moved to New York City, New York, in 1811. He moved to Richmond County, Staten Island, New York, in 1816. He then studied law, was admitted to the bar, and commenced his practice of law in New York City, New York, in 1826. That same year, both his parents, his father George passed away on September 28 at the age of 62, and his mother Elizabeth passed away just a few days after that on October 2 at the age of 52. He then served as a Prosecuting Attorney of Richmond County, New York, from 1826 to 1832. He was also elected a County Judge in 1840 and served in that position until he resigned a year later in 1841. He then served as a County Judge from 1847-1875. He then decided to run for a seat in the United States Congress and was elected to succeed the outgoing United States Representative Henry Joel Scudder (1825-1886), on March 4, 1875. A Member of the Democratic Party, he then served New York's 1st District (Forty-Fourth Congress), in the United States House of Representatives from March 4, 1875, to March 3, 1877. While serving in the United States Congress he was the Chairman on the Committee on Expenditures on Public Buildings representing the Forty-Fourth Congress. After his term in the United States Congress expired he was succeeded in office by United States Representative James Way Covert (1842-1910), on March 3, 1877. After leaving the United States Congress, he continued with his practice of law until his death. He passed away in Richmond, Staten Island, New York, on February 7, 1881, at the age of 76. His funeral service was held at the St. Andrew's Church in Richmond, Staten Island, New York, which was presided over by the Reverend Dr. Yocum, and in attendance were several members of Aquehonga Lodge F. and A.M. of which he was a proud member and founder. Following the service, his casket which was covered in black velvet was buried in Moravian Cemetery in New Dorp, New York. He was married to Mary Catherine Van Buskirk Metcalfe (1807-1895), in Staten Island, New York, on January 31, 1828. The couple had eight children together including Mary, Henry, Robert, Charles, Frances, Margaret, and George. Their son, Henry Talbot Metcalfe (1830-1897), became a prominent real estate businessman and politician.
