Son of Rachel Church Dancy and Richard Wheeler, Alfred as a young man moved with the Wheeler family from Wilkes County, North Carolina, to Jackson County, Alabama. He died of pneumonia while serving in the Civil War (AL 18th Bn Vol, Company A), leaving a young widow and three children, David, Matilda, and Amanda.
