U.S. Navy Rear Admiral. Educated as an engineer, with the outbreak of the Civil War, he joined the U.S. Navy, was commissioned an officer and one his duties was serving on a gun boat for the blockade of Mobile, Alabama. After the war, he was Chief Inspector of Machinery at the Iron Works at Bath, Maine, (1890-95), Assistant to the General Inspector at the Morgan Iron Works, New York and joined the Asiatic Squadron in Yokohama, in 1897. During the Spanish American War, he distinguished himself in several battles at sea, such as the Battle of Manila Bay, on May 1, 1898. As a result, he was promoted to Rear Admiral in April 1899 and retired that same year. He is also a member of the Military Hall of Fame.
