President of Venezuela. He was designated President in 1935 after the death of dictator Juan Vicente Gómez, and served until 1941. After the 1945 coup against President Isaías Medina Angarita, Contreras was imprisoned and later exiled to the United States, where he wrote the book "El Triunfo de la Verdad". He returned to Venezuela in 1951.
