Hall of Fame Major League Baseball Executive. From February 1969 to September 1984, he served as Major League Baseball's Commissioner. During his tenure in this position, baseball was marked with the 1981 labor strike and the end of baseball's reserve clause. Through his management, new television contracts were made and attendance gained from 23 million in 1968 to 45.5 million in 1983. Also due to his efforts, daytime games attracted a larger TV audience and all the World Series games are now shown in prime time.
