Ella and Winston May started housekeeping about one mile southeast of Newton and never moved farther than 2 miles in their lifetime. Ella was hardworking, a good manager and was strict when things needed correction but was great with praise and encouragement when earned. A proud mother of 5 boys and 1 girl.

Mrs. Ella Upton May, 82, died Thursday evening in the Olney Sanitarium where she had been a patient for about five weeks. She had been in poor health for the past two years. Funeral services were held at 1:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon in the Reese funeral home, with Rev. Wilbur DeYoung officiating. Burial was in the Vanderhoof cemetery.

A daughter of Thomas and Maria Trainor Upton, Mrs. May was born in 1868 near Boos in Jasper County. She was married to Winston Otis May on May 1, 1888. Mr. May preceded his wife in death 20 years to the day, dying on Jan. 25, 1931.

A lifelong member of the Presbyterian church of Newton, Mrs. May had lived in the Vanderhoof community in the same house for nearly 55 years.

Surviving are four sons, Ira and John of Newton, E.O. May of Chicago and Olen E. May of New Athens; a daughter, Mrs. Eunice Jenkins of Olney; one brother, Colmore Upton of Goreville; one sister, Mrs. Lucia Bruner of Newton; 17 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Preceding her in death besides her husband were four sisters and one brother.
