The somber sculpture of 'The Mourning Soldiers' by Emil Krieger stands watch over 44,000 WW1 German soldiers buried at Langemark, nearly 25,000 of whom are unidentified and are buried in a common grave. The statue was inspired by a photograph of four soldiers from Reserve Infantry Regiment 238 at the funeral of a comrade in 1918. The soldier second from right in the photograph was killed in action two days later.
