US Congressman. During the Revolutionary War, he served with General George Washington at the Battle of Long Island and other engagements. Afterwards he moved to Tuckerton, New Jersey, which was named after him, where he was active in mercantile and shipbuilding pursuits. In 1791 he was commissioned the first collector of revenue and postmaster of Tuckerton by President Washington. He also served as chief judge of the Court of Common Pleas and justice of the Court of Quarter Sessions, Burlington County, New Jersey. In 1825 he was elected to the Nineteenth and Twentieth Congresses and served until 1829. After his term, he served again as the postmaster of Tuckerton until his death.
