U.S. Congressman. He graduated from Bowdoin College Maine, in 1834, studied law at the Cambridge Law School, was admitted to the bar in 1837 and commenced the practice of law in Portland, Maine. He was editor of the Eastern Argus in 1838, register of probate for Cumberland County, Maine, (1840, 42-44) and chief clerk of the Navy Department, (1845-48). He was also Minister to Bolivia, (1848-49). In 1851, he was elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-second Congress, serving until 1853. Not a candidate for reelection, he served as secretary of the legation in London, in 1855, Assistant Secretary of State, (1857-60) and Minister to Russia, (1860-61). He resigned for health reasons and died at age 49.
