She inherited the duchy of Bretagne from her mother in 1514. In 1506 she was engaged to her cousin Francois of Angouleme, Duke of Orléans, who was then also recognized as successor to the throne. The two were married in 1514 in Saint-Germain-en-Laye. Seven months after the wedding Francois succeeded Louis XII and was crowned without his wife. She had to wait until she had given birth to a male heir, two years later. Her husband was not much interested in her and she had to suffer through his endless affairs. She was very in love with him but she was shy, not very beautiful and had a small hunchback. One of her rivals over her husbands attention was Mary Boleyn, who, like her sister Anne, was one of her ladies-in-waiting. She has no real influence at the court or anywhere, except in her duchy. The real first lady at the court was Francois mother Louise of Savoy who didn't like her very much. She reigned her duchy and often visited the Castle of Blois, where she had been raised. She died there, only 24 years old, exhausted from her seven pregnancies. A small, green plum was named after her 'Reineclaude.'
