Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. Served in the Civil War as Color Sergeant of Company A, 19th Massachusetts Infantry. He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery during his regiment's attack and repulse of elements of Pickett's Charge on the Third Day of the Battle of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania (July 3, 1863). Citation reads simply "Capture of flag". His Medal was posthumously issued on December 1, 1864, due to the fact he had subsequently been killed in action. He was one of seven 19th Massachusetts Infantry soldiers who were awarded the Medal of Honor during the Civil War (the others being Major Edmund Rice, 2nd Lieutenant John G.B. Adams, Sergeant Benjamin H. Jellison, Sergeant Daniel J. Murphy, Corporal Joseph H. De Castro and Private John H. Robinson).
