Ohio Governor. Born in Jefferson County, Ohio, he moved to Mansfield, Ohio with his family in 1814 when he was a child. Bartley graduated from Jefferson College in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania in 1829 and returned to Mansfield to study law. He was admitted to the bar in 1833 and commenced to practice as an attorney. He was elected as the Richland County Prosecuting Attorney and served from 1835 to 1839. He then became a member of the Ohio State House of Representatives and served from 1839 until he was elected as a Democrat to the Ohio State Senate in 1841. Bartley became the Speaker of the House in 1843 and was named as Ohio's Acting Governor on April 15, 1844 when Governor Wilson Shannon resigned to accept an appointment as the United States Ambassador to Mexico. Bartley became Ohio's 17th Governor while also serving as a member of the State Senate. He declined to become a candidate for reelection in 1844 and retained his seat in the State Senate. His father, Mordecai Bartley, won the election as a member of the Whig Party which created a unique situation as the only father to succeed his son in a high elected public office. He was later nominated by Ohio Senator William Allen as the United States District Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio in 1845. When the nomination was approved by the U.S. Legislature, Bartley promptly resigned from the State Senate. In February of 1852, he was elected as an Associate Justice of the Ohio Supreme Court and became the Chief Justice in 1856. Bartley retired from the court in February of 1859 and resumed his legal profession as a lawyer in Mansfield, Cincinnati, and Washington D.C. He died in Washington D.C. in 1885 when he was 73 years old and is buried there beside his second wife, Susan Sherman Bartley, a sister of General William T. Sherman.
