Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Commissioned in the Civil War as a 1st Lieutenant in the 22nd Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. He was then commissioned in the 88th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, eventually becoming its Colonel and commander. He was severely wounded in the leg during the Battle of Antietam. Upon partial recovery of his injury he was commissioned into the Veterans Reserve Corps as Colonel and commander of the 9th VRC. He was stationed in the defenses of Washington, DC, eventually commanding a brigade of the VRC. During the July 1864 Confederate strike against Washington, he led his brigade in the repulse of the attacking Rebels on the Nation's Capital. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on May 6, 1865 for "energy and good conduct in assisting to repel the attack upon Fort Slocum, DC". His grave is unmarked.
