Zoo and Circus Owner. He bacame interested in exotic animals at a young age, as his father, who dealt in wild animals as a sideline to his fish business, gave him some seals and a polar bear at the age of 14. He became an explorer and exhibitor of animals as well as native peoples both in Germany and around the world. He also trained animals for circuses and founded what later became the Hagenbeck-Wallace Circus, which he sold in 1907. But he had a dream of exhibiting animals in natural surroundings without bars and thus opened the Tierpark Hagenbeck in the Hamburg suburb of Stellingen in 1907. This zoo was the model in many ways for current modern zoos and is still a leading example today. His 150th birthday was marked by a stamp issued by the German Post Office. The bronze lion at his burial site, depicted in the photo, was stolen in January 2014.
