US Congressman. He was admitted to the bar in 1899, opened a law practice in Marion, Illinois and also engaged in the banking business. In 1915, he was elected as a Republican to the Sixty-fourth Congress and to the seven succeeding Congresses, serving until 1931. A unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed the general practice of law and banking until his death.
