Artist. He was a leading representative of Spanish realistic painting in the 19th Century. Born in Villanueva de Gállego in Aragon, Pradilla studied first at the San Fernando Academy, and then at the Spanish Academy in Rome, of which he was afterwards director. Pradilla became famous for creating historical scenes. In 1878 he submitted his best known painting, "Juana la Loca", to the National Exhibition in Spain and was awarded the Medal of Honor. In 1883, his work "The Surrender of Granada" obtained the gold medal in Munich. He then became member of the Berlin Academy in 1892. Pradilla also traveled, mostly in Italy, portraying local themes and people. In 1897 he was named director of the Museo del Prado. His total work is well over 1,000 paintings, including "Cortejo del bautizo del Príncipe Don Juan, hijo de los Reyes Católicos, por las calles de Sevilla" and "Alfonso X el Sabio." He died in Madrid at the age of 73.
