Governor of Connecticut. Elected Lieutenant Governor in 1978, he succeeded Governor Ella Grasso upon her resignation in December 1980. He was elected in 1982 and again in 1986 and would serve until 1991, at the time the longest tenure for a Connecticut Governor in nearly 200 years. He was a State Representative from 1966-1978 and came to greater prominence when named Chairman of the State Democratic Party by Grasso in 1975. He died from complications related to chronic emphysema.
