US Congressman. When Mississippi seceded from the Union at the start of the Civil War, he was elected a member of the Confederate Congress, serving 1861 to 1865. After the war, he was a delegate to the Democratic National Conventions in 1868, 1872 and 1880. In 1883, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-eighth and Forty-ninth Congresses, serving until 1887. An unsuccessful candidate for re-nomination, he engaged in agricultural pursuits until his death. His brother William Barksdale, was also a US Congressman and served as a General in the Confederate Army during the Civil War.
