Western Frontier Figure. Born in California, he was a seaman on the USS Wachusetts, when he abandoned ship in 1882, at Juneau, Alaska, to search for gold. He to crossed the Chilkoot in 1887, created a good relationship with the Tagish Indians and married a relative of the chief named Kate. Prospecting in the Yukon Territory, he was credited with the discovery of gold which set off the rush known as the Klondike Gold Fields in August 1896. The finding of gold made him wealthy and he relocated to a ranch near Hollister, California. In 1900, he moved to Seattle, Washington, where he remained until his death.
