1st British Columbia Colonial Governor. He served as Governor of Colony of Vancouver Island from 1851 to 1863), and then as Governor of the Colony of British Columbia from 1858 to 1864. He started in the northern fur trade with the Hudson's Bay Company in 1821, and established the Hudson's Bay Company at Fort Victoria in 1843. At Fort Vancouver (now Washington state) he became Chief Trader in 1835 and Chief Factor in 1839. He was assigned to build up Fort Victoria when it became clear the lower Columbia River area would be ceded to the United States and Fort Vancouver lost to the HBC. Sir James Douglas is considered by many as the founder of Victoria and the "Father of British Columbia."
