One of the most eminent physicians who ever lived in Franklin County, Tennessee. In 1812 Dr. Wallace W. Estill came from Virginia to Franklin County, Tennessee where he lived and practiced medicine for over 50 years.
In 1812 he was elected Captain of the Revolutionary Volunteers of Franklin County, a quasi-militia unit of volunteer civilians dedicated to defending Franklin County in case of a British attack during The War of 1812-1814.
About 1830 he purchased a large tract of land which contained mineral springs. He subdivided some of the land into lots for a summer resort. The site eventually became the town of Estill Springs.
Between 1837-1838 served as a Tennessee State Senator.
In 1861, at the age of 72, he enlisted as a Surgeon in the 1st Tennessee Infantry Regiment of the Confederate Army. By 1863 he had been promoted to Brigade Surgeon (Army of Tennessee) working in hospitals in Chattanooga, Tennessee and Newnan, Georgia. In 1864 he was ordered to the front lines during The Battle of Chickamauga and afterwards returned to Newnan in charge of caring for the wounded of that fight. He died in Georgia in 1864, while acting as a surgeon in the Confederate Army.∼Confederate Civil War Veteran.
