Illness began to take over most of his physical ability in the last years of his life, but he was as mentally sound as ever. Diabetes had developed and eventually led to blindness. Slowly, scores of other diseases crept in. It was discovered that exposure to Agent Orange in Vietnam was likely the cause of his illnesses.
At the much-too-young age of 53, Lee died on March 4, 1998 while at the hospital receiving routine tests. His death certificate lists chronic obstructive lung disease as the official cause.
Lee was survived by his wife, sons, extended family, and many friends. He was also survived by his faithful seeing-eye dog, Beauty, who passed away seven years after her master in 2005. She, like the rest of those who loved him, was never quite the same after his loss.
In 2003, Lee's son Jason got married and started a family of his own. His daughter-in-law Kat, grandson Myles Xavier, and granddaughter Lydia Marinne Elaine wish they could have been lucky enough to meet him.
He is missed every day.
