Governor of New Hampshire. A prosperous merchant in Manchester, New Hampshire, he was elected to the first of three terms as Mayor of Manchester in 1852. Defeated in his first run for Governor of New Hampshire in 1860, he was successfully elected in 1865 and was reelected in 1866. While governor, his backing was crucial to the founding of the New Hampshire College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts, now the University of New Hampshire, in 1866.
