Canadian Pioneer. He was a Scotsman who came to Canada in 1818, to become the Chief Trader of the Hudson's Bay Company. He was sent to work at Fort McLoughlin, a fur trading post on Campbell Island, in present-day British Columbia. In June of 1843, Ross, leading a 40-man expedition and with the help of the Songhees Indian tribe, built Fort Victoria, a fur trading post and headquarters of the Hudson's Bay Company's operation. The fort was the beginning of a settlement that later became Victoria, the capital city of British Columbia. He died from an intestinal illness approximately one year after his arrival at Fort Victoria. His wife, Isabella Mainville Ross, the first woman to own land in British Columbia, is buried in Ross Bay Cemetery.
