Harvey Henschel Dies of Heart Attack
Harvey Henschel, 45, a New Auburn township farmer, died Friday afternoon about 4:30 o'clock at the New Auburn Elevator where he was transacting business, having feed ground. Not feeling well upon arrival at the Mill, Henschel went into the Lester Damrow home, proprietor of the elevator, and rested for a time while his feed was being unloaded.
Believing he was better, "Harvey" left the home but collapsed from a heart attack and died instantly.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 17, at The Church of Peace in Glencoe at two o'clock with the Rev. Robert A. Happel conducting the rites. The choir sang, "The Lord Is My Shepherd and Keeper," and "Saviour, Thy Dying Love." Mrs. Laura Lestico presided at the organ.
This was the largest funeral ever held in the Church of Peace as there was standing room only in the lower auditorium of the church. The new public address system installed made the rites audible for all who attended.
Interment was made in the High Island cemetery at New Auburn and pallbearers were Roland Bergs, Lawrence Dahlke, Edwin Schrader, Lester Damrow, Ivan Wolters and Ehert Schuch. Borkenhagen Funeral Services was in charge of arrangements.
Harvey John Henschel, son of Henry and Bertha Henschel, was born Feb. 6, 1910 in New Auburn township, Sibley county. He was baptized in infancy and on Sept. 30, 1923, he renewed his baptismal covenant and became a communicant member of The Church of Peace through the rite of confirmation by Rev. Max Strasburg.
On Nov. 19, 1939, he was married to Mildred Kohls in the Immanuel Lutheran Church of Brownton by Rev. Gerhard Schmidt. The couple made their home on the Henschel family farm in New Auburn township. This union was blessed with four daughters.
During his life time, Mr. Henschel was an active member of The Church of Peace and at the time of his departure, he was a member of its choir. He was active in community affairs. He was chairman of the School Board of District 74 of Sibley county, Educational Director of the Shady Lane Local of the Farmers Union and Vice-President of the Glencoe Game Protective League.
Surviving, his untimely death is his wife, his four daughters: Marlys, Shirley, Phyllis and Judith; three sisters: Mrs. Richard (Lillian) Grochow, Brownton Mrs. Norman (Alice) Whim. Gibbon and Mrs. Lorenz (Sadie) Gutknecht of Winthrop. Also left to mourn his departure are his father and mother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. August Kohls, 9 brothers-in-law and five sisters-in-law. In addition to these, there are other relatives and a host of friends to whom he endeared himself.
His age at the time of his demise was 45 years, 11 months and 7 days. The death of Harvey Henschel, in the prime of life, will be felt far and wide. Harvey Henschel was beloved for the ennobling and endearing personal qualities of a man. His splendid spirit of tolerance, his keen sense of humor, his far reaching charity and his kindly nature all combined to make him one never to be forgotten.
