Henry Ide graduated from Dartmouth College in 1866, becoming a high school principal in Vermont and Massachusetts while he read law to prepare for admittance to the bar. He began practicing law in 1870. He served as a Vermont State Senator from 1882 to 1885, representing Caledonia County. In 1890 he was admitted to the bar of the United States Supreme Court. With unrest in Samoa, he was appointed by President Benjamin Harrison in 1893 to be US Commissioner in Samoa, an appointment in conjunction with Great Britain and Germany. In Samoa, he served in the capacity of Chief Justice. He was appointed Finance Secretary of the Philippines, serving from 1901 to 1906. He was appointed Vice Governor-General, serving from 1904 to 1905; Acting Governor-General from 1905 to 1906, and ultimately US Governor-General of the Philippines in 1906. He was appointed by President Taft to be US Ambassador to Spain, serving from 1909 to 1913. He served on the board of three banks and manufacturing and railroad corporations. He was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree, by Dartmouth College in 1900 and by Tufts College in 1903. He married and had a son and three daughters before his wife's death. One of his daughters married a cousin of Winston Churchill.
