Gov. Broward also served as the sheriff of Duval County, Florida, and in the Florida House of Representatives.
In December of 1883, Broward's first wife of 11 months(Georgiana Carolina "Carrie" Kemp) died during childbirth; Broward's son died a few days later. Broward withdrew from the river for a while and traveled north, but by 1885 he was back on the St. Johns, piloting his father-in-law's steamboat Kate Spencer. On the ship he met Annie Isabell Douglass, a frequent passenger. They were married in 1887
When he became governor in 1905, Annie and their 8 children had to rent a large home in Tallahassee for the first 2 years. In 1907 when the first mansion was completed, the Browards were the first to occupy Florida's official governor's home.
