In Berlin, N. Y., Feb. 5th, 1873, of consumption, Mrs. Julia Ann Whitford, widow of Dea. John Whitford, aged 64 years. Forty-four years ago, under the pastorate of the venerated Wm. Satterlee, John Whitford and his wife, Julia, the subject of this notice, began their walk with the Berlin Church - a walk which was never interrupted until they each received by death an honorable discharge. How well and faithfully they filled their place in the church and denomination, their "praise, which is in all the churches," fully attests.
Fourteen years ago, sister Whitford was called by the death of her life partner to her widowhood. In her consequent affliction, she found her consolation in Christ, and, in his religion, her comfort. Few have seen the instances where the Bible has been more thoroughly studied, or more spiritually understood.
During the past year, it has been evident to us all that her last days were fast approaching. Until last Spring, her place in Sabbath-school and church was seldom vacant. In all the meetings, her presence imparted cheer and encouragement.
In September, she visited friends in Rhode Island, hoping for a return of health. With the Autumn weeks, she returned, nevermore to visit the church until her funeral. When her last moments came, her work being done, she breathed her life out in tranquility and peace. Among her last expressed wishes was the desire to be with and behold the glories of her Jesus. The chosen text for her funeral was John 17: 24.
She leaves a son, brother, and nephew, and a large circle of friends, who will cherish her memory; while by the church her name will be held in lasting remembrance.
