Civil War Confederate Army Officer. Born in Norfolk, Virginia, he graduated from the Virginia Military Institute in 1857 and was a merchant and banker at the start of the Civil War. Commissioned a Major on the staff of General Robert E. Lee in the Army of Northern Virginia, he served as an assistant to the Adjutant General. Known as an exceedingly and responsible officer, he was promoted Colonel Chief Aide-de-Camp to General Lee. For the entire war, he was a tireless worker with many responsibilities for General Lee. He wrote dispatches and orders for Lee, plus performed personal reconnaissance and often carried messages in person to the front line commanders on the battlefields. After the war, he resumed his banking business at Norfolk, Virginia and also worked as an attorney. He held municipal offices such being elected to the Virginia General Assembly and served as a Virginia State Senator (1869-73). In the early 1900s, he also was the chief attorney for the Virginian Railway. He died at age 77 in Norfolk, Virginia.
