Elmer Frank Hacker was the fourth child of William Hacker and Maria Herr.
His siblings were Elizabeth L. Hacker Bucher Shipley, William Edward Hacker and Ida Elsie Hacker Leemann. The first born child of his parents died in infancy, or was stillborn.
In about 1905 or 1906, when Elmer was twelve years old he was in the hospital and he missed one year of school. He did finish the eighth grade and was qualified to attend High School in January 1909 with an offical certificate from the principal of Lafayette school.
When Elmer left school, he entered the printing trade by working as a "Printer's Devil". He worked for Ramsey Calender & Printing Company & Buxton-Skinner. Then he started working part-time at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and eventually worked his way up to a printer on the night shift. He retired from the Post-Disptach on July 10, 1958 at the age of 65 years.
Elmer married Edith Raines on November 18, 1919 in St. Louis, Missouri. To this union, three sons were born. The first born son died at birth. His other sons, Russell Howard and Elmer Clyde grew up to have families of their own and Elmer & Edith had a total of six grandchildren.
Elmer never owned a car and walked or took the bus to where he needed to go. He also took the train to St. Clair and Salem, Missouri to visit relatives. Elmer enjoyed walking and took to picking up lost change on his outings and eventually took up coin collecting and stamp collecting as hobbies. He was also very generous and gave help to almost anyone who asked for it. Elmer was a very active member in the Pomgranate Masonic Lodge #1919 and the Mallet & Planer Association(Retired Members of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.)
He was honored at the 25th Anniversary of the Mallet & Planer Assoc. on November 15, 1984.
He took his grandchildren, six in all, to outings such as the circus and also, through his membership in the Masons, which had wonderful Christmas parties, he was able to have his grandchildren attend, which they looked forward to attending every Christmas season.
Elmer lost his wife, Edith, of more than fifty years of marriage in October of 1972. He was a widower for more than twelve years. When Elmer died in his 91st year, he left to mourn him: two sons and two daughters-in-law, five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He had out-lived all of his siblings.
