Mary King was born in Massachusetts to English parents. Very little is known about her parents. Both of them were deceased by the time she married John H. Barfoot (c.1830-1907) of Caroline County, Virginia on March 21, 1850. The wedding was held in Richmond, just a few weeks before Mary's 14th birthday.

Mary and her family were members of the Belvidere Hill Baptist Church (now Pine Street Baptist Church) on Oregon Hill. The church was founded in 1855 and Mary and her husband were the only two original members who were in attendance for the church's 50th anniversary.

Mary died at the home of her son-in-law, Milton E. Edwards, on South Cherry Street.
