John was born in 1836 in Baden-Wurttemberg. He was the oldest of four children born to William D. Binder and Catherine Miller. He likely emigrated to this country with his family in the 1840s. The first definite record of him is in the 1850 census in Philadelphia, living with his parents and siblings Frederick Jacob, Mary C. and Anna. William Binder dies in 1855 in St. Louis, Missouri. In 1860 John is living with his mother and sister Anna in St. Louis. This is the last record that can be found of John's mother, Catherine Binder.
John marries Fannie Sheffield in Andrew County, Missouri on March 30, 1866. In 1870, John and Fannie are living in Andrew County with five month old daughter Sophia and Fannie's mother Mahala. Later records refer to Sophia as Sarah.
