Service Conducted in St Stephen's Church for First Member Killed in Action.
Memorial services for Pct Andrew Bellis, the first service man from St Stephen's Church to be killed in action in the present war, were held for him in the parish church at 2:30 Sunday afternoon at which Msgr L. Biskupski delivered a sermon in English and his assistant, Rev. John Kozel in Slovak.
The altar was adorned in flowers and lighted candles and facing it suspended from the choir loft, hung the service flag with 437 blue stars, 7 silver stars and 3 gold stars. The gold stars were for Mr Bellis, and for Louis Elko, who died of a extended illness and Ervin Micklos, killed while on a furlough in this city. Two are reported missing in action, Frank Kozak and George Bakalar.
"The Libera", "Jesus Lover of My Soul" and several other hymns were sung by the Senior choir with Mrs. Frank Quaife the organist.
The Streator Post of the American Legion conducgted its burial ritual, Angelo Fornero acting as chpalain and A. R. Van Loon, assistant. The flag used in the service was presented to Andrew Bellis, father of the deceased hero. The church was filled with neighbors and friends of the family, every available seat being filled. Assisting with the flowers, sent by sympathetic citizens, were in charge of Carol Jean Bellis and Patricia Sholtis.
Pvt. Bellis, who entered the service March 27, 1942, and who was reported missing in action in France, August 15, was killed on the latter date, according to the telegram from the War Department received here August 20. He was stationed at Fort Knox, Ky, Camp Pickett, VA., and Indiantown Gap, Pa., leaving for overseas in June 1944.
He was born in this city August 15, 1912, son of Andrew Bellis Sr., and the late Anna Bellis. He grew to manhood here receiving his education in St Stephen's school and attend the high school for a time. He was employed as a carpenter and was fond of outdoor sports.
Five brothers are in service: John "Jack" Bellis, S 1-C USN, Sgt Dan Bellis in France, Pvt John L Martin, in France, PFC Edward Bellis in Saipan, and Pvt Ralph W Bellis, Buckley Field, Colo. Other brothers and sisters are George, Raymond, Grace, Ann Marie, Thomas and Richard Bellis of Streator.
Relatives and friends from out of the city who attended the services were Andrew Bellis and daughters of Odell, Mr. and Mrs. George Quaka Jr., and daughter of Blackstone, Mr. and Mrs. Don Hilton of Ottawa; Mr. and Mrs. Walter Thomas of Ottawa and Miss Alta Williams of Wenona.
