Ancient Egyptian Pharaoh. He ruled during Egypt's Eighteenth Dynasty, one of that country's mot prosperous periods and his monuments indicate that as a young man he excelled in athletic as well as military pursuits. He began as co-regent with Thutmose III, becoming sole ruler on that Pharaoh's death in 1453 BC. As news of Thutmose's death spread the Asiatic cities took the opportunity to rebel against Egypt, but by the second year of his reign he had subdued the uprising and captured seven princes and much booty. The following year he completed his father's temple at Aswan and set up a stele there recording how he sacrificed the seven unfortunate princes and hung their bodies from the walls of Thebes and Napata. He campaigned in Palestine again in the ninth year of his reign but the remainder of his rule was peaceful. He died in 1419 BC after ruling for thirty four years. After the plunder of Valley of the Kings his tomb was used as a cache for the mummies of eight other Pharaohs. His mummy now rests with them in Cairo Museum.
