Composer. Born in Sterzing, Austria, he studied music in Darmstadt with Abbe Vogler and later in Vienna with Antonio Salieri. For many years he was a close friend of early Romantic composers Carl Maria von Weber and Giocomo Meyerbeer, though his own style remained essentially Classical. From 1823 until his death he held the important position of Kapellmeister at St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna, and the bulk of his music consists of liturgical works, including 17 masses. Gänsbacher was among the 50 musicians who wrote variations on a waltz by Anton Diabelli (the tune that inspired Beethoven's "Diabelli Variations") for the anthology "Vaterländischer Künstlerverein" (1823 to 1824). He also produced a symphony, an opera, and several keyboard sonatas. Originally buried at Vienna's St. Marxer Cemetery, his remains were reinterred in an honor grave at the Zentralfriedhof in the early 1900s.
