50th New Jersey Governor. As President of the New Jersey State Senate, he became the State’s acting Governor in 1919 when previous sitting Governor Walter E. Edge resigned after being elected to the United States Senate. Served as New Jersey’s Governor from 1919 to 1920, and ran for election for a full term, but he was defeated by Jersey City political boss Frank Hague’s acolyte Edward I. Edwards.
