College Football Coach. Born in Saginaw, Michigan, he is regarded as one of the college football's all-time best coaches. Attending Alma College Michigan, he lettered as a football tight end and graduated a Bachelor of Science in 1939. For the next 14 seasons, he coached football at four Michigan high schools, was an assistant coach at Michigan State, (1953-56) and was head coach at the University of Wyoming, (1957-61). Going to the University of Nebraska as head football coach 1962, he led the Huskers to National Championships (1970-71) and Big Eight titles (1963-66, 1969-72). He retired from coaching in 1972, with a record of 136-30-7 and Bowls 7-3. He was then the University of Nebraska full-time athletic director retiring in 1996. In 1981, he was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame. He died from a heart attack at age 82 in Lincoln, Nebraska.
