US Senator. He graduated from the medical department of the University of Michigan, in 1889, took postgraduate courses in Europe and was house surgeon in the University of Michigan Hospital, (1889-90). He also practiced medicine in Bay City, Michigan, (1890-95), was professor in the medical department of the University of Michigan, (1895-1908) and Mayor of Ann Arbor, Michigan, (1901-03). In addition, he was president of the park board, (1905-06), president of the Ann Arbor Board of Education, (1907-08) and a member of the Michigan State tuberculosis board of trustees, (1900-08). Moving to New York City, in 1908, he was dean of the New York Flower Hospital and Medical College, (1908-18), a member of the United States pension examining board in 1917 and commissioner of public health and president of the New York Board of Health, (1918-22). Entering politics, he was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate in 1922 and served until his death at age 69.
