New Jersey Governor, U.S. Presidential Cabinet Member. He graduated from Lafayette College, in 1868, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1871 and Paterson, New Jersey. He was a member of the New Jersey House of Representatives, (1876-78), served as the City Attorney of Paterson, (1879-82) and was a member of the New Jersey State Senate, (1882-85). In 1895, he was elected as a Republican the 36th Governor of New Jersey, serving until 1898. As Governor, a commission was organized to revise state statutes; anti-gambling laws were sanctioned and construction was approved to build a dam on the Delaware River. He resigned from office, to accept an appointment from President William McKinley as the 43rd U.S. Attorney General, serving (1898-1901). He then served on the Permanent Court of Arbitration, (1901-12). From 1919, he was RCA’s director and the company's general counsel until his death at age 78.
