Dortha Lovell Sayre, 95, formerly of Downing, MO, passed away at the Scotland County Care Center in Memphis, MO, July 16, 2004.

The daughter of Joseph Henry and Laura (Bloyles) Daniel, she was born March 19, 1909 in rural Green City, MO.

On November 28, 1930, in Milan, MO, she was united in marriage to Arthur Clarence Sayre, and to this union three children were born, Charles, Joe and Edwin. She and Arthur lived on a farm in the Downing area after their marriage, where they continued to live until the time of his death.

Survivors include her two sons, Edwin Sayre of Downing, MO and Joe E. Sayre of Bloomfield, IA; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Ruby Burgess of Colorado Springs, CO; one brother, Gail Daniel of Jamesport, MO; and one daughter-in-law, Roberta Martin of Downing, MO. Besides her family, she leaves a host of neighbors and friends to mourn her passing.

Dortha was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Arthur Clarence Sayre on December 7, 1987; one son, Charles Arthur Sayre in 1978; one daughter-in-law, Carol Sayre in 2003; one great-great-grandson and siblings, Cecil, Beulah, Murl, Delman and Elmo.

Dortha was a faithful member of the United Methodist Church in Downing, MO, where she was a Sunday School teacher for many years. She was also a member of the church quilting group as long as her health permitted. Dortha was also a schoolteacher in the country schools in the Green City area.

Funeral services were held July 16, 2004, at the United Methodist Church in Downing, MO, with David Hartsfield, pastor of the United Methodist Church, officiating. Music was provided by organist, Willa Mae Gooden and soloist, Nancy Mobley. Pallbearers were her grandsons. Memorials have been established for the United Methodist Church in Downing, MO. Burial was in the Downing City Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Norman Funeral Home of Downing, MO.
