Civil War Union Army Officer. He served as Colonel and commander of the 6th Michigan Volunteer Infantry, being promoted to that rank on June 21, 1862. After serving briefly twice as commander of the 1st Brigade, 2nd Division, XIX Army Corps, Army of the Gulf, he was transferred as Colonel and commander of the 1st Michigan Volunteer Heavy Artillery on July 28, 1863. He served in that duty until he resigned on January 29, 1864.
